Sheridan Smith has confirmed that she named her son after Billy Connolly and it’s safe to say the comedian was chuffed.
The Cilla actress welcomed her first child with fiance Jamie Horn in May and confirmed two months later that they named him Billy.
However, the inspiration behind Sheridan and Jamie’s choice of name for their baby boy was a mystery until now.
In a trailer for documentary Billy Connolly: It’s Been A Pleasure, which aired on Good Morning Britain, Sheridan is briefly seen chatting to the comedian via Facetime and informs him that she actually named Billy after him.
Clearly stunned by the revelation, Billy laughs and asks: ‘Really?’ while appearing flattered.
Sheridan, 39, announced she had given birth to her first child earlier this year, writing in a social media post: ‘Our little man has arrived! We are both completely overwhelmed with love.’
She later added: ‘I’d just like to say thank you so much! We have been so touched by all your lovely messages about the birth of our son.
‘I’ve finally gotten round to reading all of them and am bowled over by everyone’s kindness. It means the world.’
However, the Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps actress admitted it was ‘scary’ to welcome a child during the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking on the podcast Jack and the Beanstalk: After Ever After in November, Sheridan explained: ‘We were in lockdown for eight weeks after that with no help and we hadn’t had antenatal classes, so it was a bit of a scary time.’
Prior to Billy’s birth, Sheridan said she wasn’t sure she could ‘cope’ with being a mother, telling The Daily Telegraph’s Stella mag: ‘My mum tells me she knows I could.
‘She watched me with my dad in the last few days of his life and told me if I could be that caring I would be a perfect mother – but I don’t know. I just know I’m not perfect.’
Sheridan and Jamie began dating in 2018 after matching with each other on dating app Tinder. They got engaged in May of that year.
Billy Connolly: It’s Been A Pleasure airs on December 28 at 9:30pm on ITV.
