Sir David Attenborough’s so punctual he once turned up a day early to receive an award

Sir Michael Palin has shared a brilliant anecdote about Sir David Attenborough, revealing he once turned up a day early to an awards ceremony.

Speaking on The Gaby Roslin Podcast, Sir Michael, 77, shared a sweet story about the naturalist, 94, admitting he’d turned up on the wrong day to collect his award.

He explained: ‘I’ll tell you a little story that sums up David. He’s very loyal – if someone asks him to go somewhere, he will generally try and make it.

‘I went to an event at Canada House and he was going to be given a medal. This was about a couple of years ago and I was asked along and I was there.

‘People were getting together and having their drinks and, suddenly, David appears. He doesn’t have an entourage.

‘He didn’t have anyone with him, he just came in in his coat and took his coat off and said hello to everybody. Very direct, very natural.’

Sir Michael revealed Sir David’s confession, explaining: ‘I said to him, “David, you are brilliant, you turn up to all of these things” and he said, “Well, I turned up last night [but] it was the wrong night.”

‘Which is just brilliant. He not only came once but he’d come twice and presumably gone home again afterwards!’

Sir David made headlines last year after he broke the record to be the fastest person to gain 1million followers on Instagram, beating Jennifer Aniston who had previously held the title.

However, he has since told fans he won’t be returning to the photo sharing site, saying: ‘I’m so old I can’t get used to all these new media but I was persuaded to do so in order to do a message about conservation.

‘So for a limited period of time I contributed to Instagram but I’m off now. I’m not on it anymore and I don’t intend to go back.

‘I’ve got enough problems with post. I get 70 letters a day! I do my very best [to respond to them all]. Sometimes people, mercifully, don’t actually put their address on because people are so unaccustomed to sending letters.’
