The most expensive home in California, US, has gone on the market for $160 million (£118 million).

The stunning cliffside estate, known as ‘Sanctuary at Loon Point’, overlooks the central coast from the beach town of Carpinteria.

The property boasts 2,129 feet of coastline and 22 acres of landscaping, dividing into two estates – Ocean View and Bellevue, connected by a private, gated road.

The houses have been carefully positioned to take advantage of the incredible ocean views with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Terracotta tile roofs sit atop the Mediterranean-style mansions, and inside you’ll see high ceilings with exposed natural beams, hardwood floors, stone archways and marble accents.

Luxury additions include a grand library, huge swimming pools, beautifully designed courtyards with marble statues, and oversized kitchens.

Between the two joint residences, the property boasts 10 bedrooms, 21 bathrooms and 14,189sq ft of interior space.

Outside is a hub for local wildlife, with the natural pond attracting ducks, herons and other fauna. Meanwhile, the scenic walk to the beach offers views of the coastal birds.

The beach is also located on the migration route of the California Grey Whale and is home to sea lions and harbour seals, making it perfect for wealthy nature lovers.

The self-titled ‘world’s safest beach’, Carpinteria is home to celebs including Ellen DeGeneres, Ashton Kutcher, and Kevin Costner. So you probably won’t be able to borrow some milk from the neighbours without getting through their security.

The state is already chock full of pricey real estate – with the average house price sitting at $1.5 million (£1.1million) – but Sanctuary at Loon Point is sold for the asking price, it will be second only to Jeff Bezos’ purchase of the $165 million (£121 million) Warner estate.

It will also make it the third most expensive sale in the nation – behind the frontrunner, a $238 million (£175 million) Central Park apartment in Manhattan.

The property is currently owned by hedge-fund manager and Julliard school chairman Bruce Kovner, and is on the market with The Agency.

Although it looks idyllic, with a price tag like that, it might end up on the market even longer than that languishing property that Selling Sunset’s Davina famously failed to sell.
