Woman transforms Ikea wooden cabinet into stylish rattan sideboard

What an update. (Picture: @megmonde)

Meg Yapp has been hard at work transforming a simple wooden cabinet into a stylish sideboard with cane webbing.

The 26-year-old purchased her Derbyshire home last year and has been busy renovating and decorating it. The result is a stunning pink and green paradise.

And her latest DIY venture is actually pretty easy to recreate at home.

Meg has taken two Ikea Ivar cabinets and given them a contemporary update.

She achieved this by painting the wood and removing some of the doors, before replacing it with cane webbing.

Not only does it look great, but this project is likely to save money rather than buying a new sideboard of a similar design – which typically cost around £500.

Each Ikea cabinet is £45 each – then there’s just webbing, paint and legs of your choosing (and different varieties can be picked up according to budget).

Meg has shared with us how to create the look for yourself at home – and it’s worth pointing out that the paint can be tailored to suit your colour scheme of choice.

You can find more details of the makeover over on her Instagram (@megmonde) and blog.

What you’ll need:

  • Ikea Ivar cabinet(s)
  • Jigsaw
  • Drill with wood drill part
  • Sand paper
  • Paint
  • Paint brush
  • Mini roller
  • Cane webbing (11 feet of 18″ wide)
  • Staple gun
  • Scissors
  • Legs

Instructions

1. Take off the doors and mark out where you want to cut.

2. Drill holes in all four corners, and then use a jigsaw to cut out the middle of each door. Once you’ve finished cutting, sand each door.

Additional tips

The process may sound simple enough, but Meg has given some additional advice for things she found useful.

When it comes to the wood, she tells Metro.co.uk: ‘When cutting your doors, make sure to leave plenty of space to staple your cane webbing to the back.’

She also has tips for prepping the webbing.

Meg says: ‘Soak your cane webbing in warm water for 30+ minutes prior to stapling. This makes the cane flexible and therefore safer to cut.

‘When fitting your cane webbing, make sure to keep your webbing nice and straight all the way down.’
