The much-anticipated Joker sequel has been confirmed and, even better, it looks like Joaquin Phoenix is on-board.

Director Todd Phillips finally ended ongoing speculation that a second instalment of the critically acclaimed blockbuster was in the works, when he shared a photo of the script on Tuesday.

In the Instagram post, a black and white photo shows Joaquin sitting beside a window with a picturesque skyline in the backdrop, and smoking a cigarette as the script rests on his lap.

Todd also included a close-up photo of the red cover of the script, which reveals the title as:  ‘Joker Folie a Deux,’ the French referencing a medical term relating to a mental disorder which affects two or more people, and ‘written by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips’. In the bottom left-hand corner, the script is dated May 18, 2022, so they’ve been keeping the news under their hats for a few weeks at least.

The original Joker, released in October 2019, was a huge commercial success grossing over $1billion at the box office worldwide, as well as a critical one with the dark film earning 11 Oscar nominations and winning two for best original score and best actor for Joaquin’s performance as the deranged stand-up comedian turned serial killer.

Joaquin also won best actor accolades at the Baftas, the Critic’s Choice Awards (CCA), Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards.

The original film followed the life of the tortured wannabe comedian Arthur Fleck, whose feelings of being downtrodden by society ultimately transform him into the infamous criminal mastermind.

Alongside Joaquin, the film’s cast also included Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz.

Reports of a sequel first emerged in May 2021 but Joaquin’s involvement may come as a surprise as he previously expressed mixed feelings about a second movie.

He told LA Times: ‘Long before the release or before we had any idea if it would be successful, we talked about sequels.’

‘In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, “Todd, can you start working on a sequel? There’s way too much to explore.” It was kind of in jest — but not really.’

Then he added: ‘I wouldn’t just do a sequel just because the first movie is successful. That’s ridiculous.’

A release date for Joker 2 is yet to be announced.
