The timing works out especially well for Smith and Yungblud, who are set to release new studio albums near the show date. Smith’s third studio album, Love Goes, is due Oct. 30. Yungblud’s second studio album, Weird!, is due Nov. 13.
Maluma and Doja Cat will be performing on the EMA stage for the first time. Maluma is nominated for three awards, including two categories that are newly added this year: best Latin and best virtual live. The latter category was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to be short-lived.
Doja Cat and Yungblud are each nominated in the same two categories: best new and best push. Larsson won in the best new category four years ago.
Smith is nominated in one category: best collaboration for “I’m Ready,” their pairing with Demi Lovato.
Unlike last year’s MTV EMA, which were held at FIBES Conference and Exhibition Centre, Seville, Spain, this year’s show will be shot in multiple locations around the world. Show host and additional performers and presenters to be announced.
As previously announced, Lady Gaga is the top nominee for the 2020 MTV EMA, with seven nods, including best video, best song and best collaboration, all for “Rain On Me,” her megahit collab with Ariana Grande. BTS and Justin Bieber are runners-up, with five nods.
Bruce Gillmer and Richard Godfrey are executive producers of the two-hour MTV EMA. Debbie Phillips and Chloe Mason are producers. Gillmer was also executive producer (along with Jesse Ignjatovic) of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.
Voting is now open at mtvema.com. It will remain open until Nov. 2 at 11:59 p.m. CET (central European time).
