Sara Bareilles, Meg Toohey and ‘Waitress’ Band Remember Nick Cordero on Moving ‘Lucky Streak’

Sara Bareilles, Meg Toohey and the cast of Broadway musical Waitress have paid tribute to Nick Cordero with the new ballad “Lucky Streak.”

The moving country-esque ballad, written and produced by Toohey, is a journey through Cordero’s life in New York with his wife Amanda Kloots and their one-year-old son, Elvis, and their move to Los Angeles in the time before Cordero died at age 41 in July due to complications from COVID-19.

“We made the move all the way out west because that was the way I had picture it best/We were so alive/So alive,” Toohey sings, with Bareilles providing sweet harmonies. “And I always knew that you were the one/I gave you my heart and you gave me a son/We were so alive/We were so alive/That was the start of my lucky streak/ I was feeling rock-solid/Feeling rock solid.”

Bareilles and Toohey are accompanied by the band from the musical (written by Bareilles), which includes Nadia Digiallonardo, Rich Mercurio, Lee Nadel, Yair Evnine and Adam Kaufmann.

“Nick was an incredibly vibrant and fun-loving guy,” Toohey told People about her friend, a beloved Broadway actor who was nominated for a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his role in Bullets Over Broadway; he originated the role of Earl in the Broadway production of Waitress.

“He loved music and loved performing. He also loved hanging ‘as one of us’ in the band room at Waitress and would talk about his band and guitars,” Toohey said. “The entire cast and crew loved him dearly and he brought an incredible positive light to any experience he was part of.” Bareilles said getting to sing Toohey’s “gorgeous” tribute to Cordero was “a gift.” The singer said she was weeping as she laid down her vocals.

“This song is cathartic… beautiful and bittersweet and speaks of the pain of love and loss and the gently universal truth that we must hold it all lightly and enjoy our lucky streaks; these perfectly imperfect lives. What a song,” she told the magazine.
