Alan Carr addressed the moment he had to stand-in for his bestie Adele on her recent one-off show, and promised it had not been set up for the cameras.

Comedian Alan was one of a host of famous faces lucky enough to witness An Audience With Adele, which was recently broadcast on ITV.

But one moment saw the Chattyman host have to get up on stage when his pal needed a minute to fix her makeup after a particularly emotional segment.

Adele was surprised by her old English teacher Miss McDonald, after actress Emma Thompson asked her to name someone who helped inspire her when she was younger.

Lo and behold, her teacher was sat in the audience and brought up on stage to reunite with her former pupil, leaving Adele and millions of viewers in tears.

Alan was drafted onto the stage in the meantime and performed a rendition of Someone Like You and has now hit back at claims the segment was a set up.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on her Radio 2 Breakfast Show, he explained how there had been some editing out in parts which ended up making him look more keen than he was on the night.

He said: ‘Can I tell you something? When I watched it back I was horrified!

‘What they’d done in the edit, they’d cut out the first 5 minutes of me going “No Adele, no no no, ask someone else, please not me, not me”.’

‘And then of course in the edit, I’m jumping up like a rat up a drainpipe, like one of these X-Factor starlet wannabees, “Me?! Maybe I can sing a song, but my new album…!”.’

Alan went on to say: ‘People said it was such a set-up, but you’d think I would learn the words if I was going to sing at The Palladium with one of the biggest stars in the world.

‘But yeah my phone just exploded when it happened. I knew I couldn’t sing, but I couldn’t sing that bad!’

Zoe responded: ‘I was thinking, has he forgotten the words or is he just turning to the audience. I was thinking that is awkward.

‘Luckily she was at the back of the stage and she couldn’t hear. Oh, you were all of us I think…. that would be my worst nightmare, being made to sing.’

Giving a nod to some of the megastars in the crowd, he added: ‘Oh I’m looking out, there’s Dua Lipa, there’s Samuel L Jackson, there’s Emma Thompson who, her dancing… I mean my singing was the only song she didn’t dance to…

‘I was a little bit put out, but yeah, listen it was just crazy!’

Although he wasn’t quite up to Adele’s vocal standard, he provided some much-needed laughs for the audience after a very tearful few minutes.

The Hello singer recorded the anticipated concert on November 7 with a bevy of stars in the audience, including Idris Elba, Emma Watson, Gareth Southgate and Stormzy.
