And Just Like That: Samantha Jones return officially ruled out as the door is permanently shut on Kim Cattrall for Sex and The City reboot

The creator of Sex And The City reboot And Just Like That has addressed whether Kim Cattrall could ever return as fan-favourite Samantha Jones… shutting the door on the possibility completely.

When it was announced that the original show was being revived, fans were devastated to hear that Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) would not be joined by the fourth member of their friendship group.

However, mentions of Samantha in the show in dialogue between the characters made some viewers speculate that at some point, she could come back.

After Kim previously made it clear that she wasn’t interested in returning to the franchise, in a new interview, writer, executive producer and director Michael Patrick King was asked if Kim could return in future.

‘No,’ he bluntly replied to Variety. ‘Just like there was no thought that Kim would ever participate in And Just Like That, because she’s said what she had said.’

He continued: ‘The only place I participate in magical thinking is in fiction. You take people at their word, and you’re a smart producer – you don’t back yourself into a corner. Magically thinking, it’s great to have Samantha. I have no realistic expectation of Kim Cattrall ever appearing again.’

Nonetheless, he said how ‘magical’ it was that Samantha could still be a part of a show through texts, saying: ‘You feel like she’s there again.’

Michael expressed that he likes the idea of a ‘dance’ between Samantha and Carrie, when Carrie asks her former best friend: ‘Do you want to talk?’ and Samantha replies: ‘Soon,’ stating: ‘Like, they’re getting ready. It might as well be Carrie and Aidan.’

He added that he’s ‘happy’ when Samantha is incorporated into the narrative, saying they use the references ‘sparingly and well’.

‘It was important emotionally for everybody. Me and the fans; me and the viewer,’ he stated.

With And Just Like That coming to an end this week, it was recently revealed that a documentary about the making of the series is due to be released shortly afterwards.

In a trailer released for the documentary, Sarah revealed how ‘terrified and excited’ she was to reprise her role over two decades after first playing Carrie.

‘When someone yells action, I just feel more whole,’ she says.
