Katherine was joined on Sunday by former Strictly professional Flavia Cacace-Mistry to discuss the performances from last night’s show when she made the comment.
While Dan was left annoyed with himself after making a mistake during his Sleeping Beauty-themed foxtrot, co-star Katherine said he’s ‘one of those irritating people who’s never not been good at anything’.
It wasn’t the best of nights for Dan, who was given three points by judge Craig Revel Horwood and critiqued by a ‘mortified’ Anton du Beke.
‘We’ve got to talk about Dan first, haven’t we?’ Katherine said during a look back at the performances on Sunday’s Breakfast.
‘Because he’s got all those ballroom elements, but just that big mistake. You could see his shoulders slump when he had to face the criticism of the judges. I really felt for him,’ she said.
Flavia replied: ‘He’s going to be good at the ballroom, you need to just stick with it. Keep going, keep working on that hold.’
Speaking more about Dan’s reaction to the mistake, Katherine said: ‘Obviously he doesn’t have that performance experience, when something goes wrong, immediately you can see it in his face.
‘I was like, “No! Keep going!” He did keep going though, so that’s good. Hopefully it’s just a learning curve.’
Katherine went on to add: ‘I think he’s one of those irritating people who’s never not been good at anything! So for him to make that error, that was the mistake, wasn’t it? He quickly got back into it though.’
“He let his face sort of tell you, because sometimes on the screen you can’t actually see the mistakes,’ Flavia also said.
‘It’s different to watching live so he could have gotten away with it a little bit more. I think now it’s happened once, he now knows that if it does happen again, he’s just got to keep going, keep smiling.’
The pair were awarded 21 points but Claudia Winkleman helpfully reminded Dan of his very busy week, which saw him interview the PM – and made a cheeky dig in the process.
After receiving their score, Dan said: ‘You’ve got to take it on the chin haven’t you, hopefully we’ll get it another chance.’
Strictly continues tonight at 7.10pm on BBC One. BBC Breakfast returns on Monday at 6am on BBC One.
