Bridgerton creator was ‘stunned’ after discovering Julia Quinn’s book ‘by accident’

Bridgerton creator Julia Quinn has spoken about her novel being brought to life onscreen, saying that it all happened ‘by accident’.

Julia, whose book The Duke and I inspired the hugely popular Netflix drama, revealed that producer Shonda Rhimes discovered her book by chance.

Speaking on Lorraine this morning, the author said she was ‘stunned’ after her 2000 novel was stumbled upon by Shona while she was on vacation.

‘I was stunned,’ Julia told host Lorraine Kelly. ‘I was sitting at a Starbucks, like one of the guys pretending to write, and my agent called and he said, “Have you heard of Shonda Rhimes?”

‘I thought it was a trick question because, of course, I’ve heard of Shonda Rhimes. And he said he’d just had the most interesting call. That was about four years ago.’

Speaking about the show being developed, Julia said: ‘It took a while, but now it’s here. The story I heard was that Shonda had taken some books on vacation, and she’d run out of books to read, and somehow somebody had given her one of mine.’

Julia added: ‘There you go, you couldn’t even imagine that that would happen. That’s almost like a part of a Hollywood movie in itself.’

Shonda’s discovery was instrumental to the show getting made for Netflix. As well as producing Bridgerton, Shonda is known for her work on Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder.

The first season of Bridgerton tells the love story between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), but the later novels in the series focus more on other members of the Bridgerton family.

Julia teased season two of the show, saying that she expects Antony Briderton (Jonathan Bailey) to play a more prominent role.

‘I haven’t seen the script. So I can’t tell you exactly what happens. Except that I did write the book that it’s based on. So I have a good idea,’ she said.

Julia also recently said that she wants more sex scenes between Daphne and the Duke in season two, after sidelining them in her novels.

Figures show that 82million households have tuned in to the Regency romance series since it debuted, making it the most popular Netflix show ever.

Netflix confirmed that a second season of the show was on the way earlier this year, announcing that filming will begin in the UK in spring.
