Charlene White was forced to interject during a discussion on Loose Women to prevent an argument taking place when Carol McGiffin reiterated her refusal to stand for pregnant women on public transport.
On Thursday’s edition of the ITV programme, the panel – which also included Katie Piper and Denise Welch – were taking part in a ‘kindness quiz’ to determine who could be described as the kindest person among them.
One of the questions they answered, using paddles with a green side and a red side to denote yes or no, was whether or not they would give up their seat while travelling on public transport.
‘Oh, never,’ Carol immediately answered, as Denise remarked that ‘it would depend’.
Denise continued, saying that she was recently on a train when she was ‘horrified’ that ‘not one man, even a young man’ stood up for a lady who was ‘struggling’, acknowledging that her remark was ‘gender-specific’.
Carol then tweaked her answer, stating: ‘Old and disabled, yes. But, we’ve had this argument on here many, many times, pregnant women no. That’s your fault you got pregnant, not mine.’
Charlene appeared to react in an exasperated manner, putting her paddle down on the table as the group continued talking.
Katie pointed out that if you stand up for someone who you think is pregnant, you might accidentally offend them if they’re not, which Carol agreed with.
Charlene felt it was best to put an end to the topic of conversation at that stage, chiming in to say: ‘Well look – probably best not to start that discussion since Carol and I would be arguing for quite a bit about that particular point.’
This isn’t the first time that Carol has made her views on offering her seat to pregnant women abundantly clear, sparking anger in 2019 when she said: ‘I mean you’re pregnant, not ill.’
Earlier in the show, she and Denise clashed in a heated discussion about drinking, as the latter spoke about how it had been 10 years since she decided to go sober.
While Denise outlined how supportive Carol was of her when she chose to give up alcohol, she also told her friend that she believes she should ‘drink less’.
‘You have had breast cancer as well and I think that you should not drink as much because you’ve had that. I worry about it from a health point of view,’ she said.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
