Christine McGuinness admits The Games has been ‘sensory overload’ and ‘quite difficult to deal with’ due to autism

Christine McGuinness has thrown herself into The Games but she has admitted it hasn’t been easy.

The 34-year-old star – who has been open about being diagnosed with autism and raising three children who have also been diagnosed with the neurodevelopmental disorder – is taking part in ITV’s action packed new sport show, and she’s really stepped out of her comfort zone.

The mum-of-three admitted the show has been ‘quite a lot’ to deal with due to the ‘sensory overload’, the change to her daily routine and other aspects.

Appearing on ITV’s This Morning on Monday, she said: ‘I’m autistic, all three children are autistic as well, and we do have our struggles. I struggle a lot with things other people don’t don’t, so the crowd, the sensory overload, anxiety, the noise – it’s quite a lot.

‘The change in routine every day has been quite difficult to deal with. Being around a new group of people has been so, so hard, but as time’s gone on it’s got a lot easier.’

Christine – appearing on the show alongside fellow competitors Colson Smith and Ryan Thomas – gave a special shout out to ‘the girls’ on the show, namedropping Chelcee Grimes in particular as someone who’s helped her.

‘I’ve gotta thank the girls – Chelcee especially, she’s been amazing. Everyone’s just been incredible,’ she added. ‘I want my children to know when they grow up, nothing should hold them back because they’re autistic.

‘We can still try, we can still do our best. And I’m here! I can’t believe it!’

Christine revealed her husband Paddy McGuinness is taking charge at home while she’s busy working, which she admitted has been ‘good for all of us’ as a break from their usual lifestyle.

She explained: ‘[Paddy’s] really happy. He’s had loads of time off work, he’s at home with the kids. He’ll be watching! It’s mad, it’s mad how our lives changed. Usually it’s me there and he’s away working, but it’s been brilliant.

‘It’s been good for all of us as a family. Again, that shows growth in me and the children, how we’re dealing with change now – and we’re enjoying it as well! I’ve loved it, this has been like a massive holiday for me!’

When it comes to the physical side of the show itself, Christine admitted she’s in great shape – although she tried to stay humble and play down her fitness levels.

‘I think we’re all doing really, really good. I haven’t always been really fit,’ she laughed. ‘I’m not that fit now, I probably look fitter than I am!’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV. The Games starts tonight at 9pm on ITV.
