Cobra Kai season 3 will reveal new secrets to Mr Miyagi’s life, Ralph Macchio reveals

Cobra Kai’s Ralph Macchio has teased to fans that Mr Miyagi’s past life will play a significant role in season 3.

In the original Karate Kid films of the 1980s, Mr Miyagi (the late Pat Morita) took Daniel (played by Ralph), under his wing, and taught him all there is to know about the art of karate as a form of defence against bullies, led by Johnny (William Zapka).

… Or so fans thought until now.

As Netflix series Cobra Kai revived the fictional world once again, viewers have been seeing Johnny’s world in a brand new light – and now we’re about to see Miyagi and Daniel’s worlds differently too.

Miyagi was the much-needed father figure in Daniel’s life, but actor Ralph has warned there was another side to his sensei that is just about to be discovered, as Daniel returns to Okinawa, Japan, and runs into some familiar faces.

‘LaRusso learns things about Miyagi-Do and things about Mr. Miyagi that he did not know, and neither does the audience know,’ Ralph explained to Entertainment Weekly.

‘So we are both, the audience and LaRusso, learning things about Miyagi-Do and Mr. Miyagi that we did not expect.’

‘That’s something I’ve been asking for from very early on in making this show,’ he continued.

‘Because there are certainly elements of that, that we got to see through Johnny Lawrence’s journey in seasons one and two, you got to learn things about him that you didn’t know, but you felt like, “Oh, we know everything about Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi.”

‘So we were always looking for that, and in season three, we get that. It’s a nice balance.’

Miyagi actor Morita died of heart failure on November 24, 2005 at the age of 73, but is often remembered throughout the show as Daniel continues to carry his legacy.

In the upcoming episodes, Daniel and Johnny, whose feud has now lasted for more than 30 years, are left to deal with the consequences of their rivalry, with a new generation of teenagers getting tangled up in their messy war.

At the end of season two, Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) was left in hospital, while Daniel’s daughter Sam (Mary Mouser) was slashed by a rival’s weapon and Johnny’s son Robby (Tanner Buchanan) went on the run.

Can they figure out their differences before someone gets killed?

Cobra Kai drops in January on Netflix.
