Alan Cumming and Miriam Margolyes proved to be the comedic duo we didn’t know we needed as they enjoyed a trek around Scotland in Miriam and Alan: Lost in Scotland tonight.

The new Channel 4 travel series follows the 56-year-old actor and the 80-year-old actress as they tour the country in a van, revisiting the streets where Alan grew up.

In this evening’s episode, the pair took a trip down memory lane in Glasgow and Carnoustie, to find out if Alan was related to Cawdor aristocrats.

The first chapter of the three-part special had many light-hearted moments in the beginning, but it later took a dark turn when Alan opened up to Miriam about his traumatic childhood.

As they both walked into his childhood shed, he confessed: ‘This is where my father would come out here with sheep shears in this shed.’

A shocked Miriam replied: ‘I’m sorry you had to go through such horrible things.’

On their drive to Cawdor, Alan started singing Lady Gaga’s former hit Edge of Glory and in classic Miriam style, she couldn’t help but compare the global phenomenon to another musical legend.

‘I prefer her to Madonna, I think Madonna is over,’ she quipped.

Alan struggled to hold back his laughter and insisted Miriam rephrase her statement.

‘You can’t live your life being frightened of Madonna, let her be frightened of you darling,’ she teased.

The pair’s hilarious yet slightly random conversations in the van had viewers praising their on-screen chemistry.

One fan said: ‘Whoever came up with the concept of having Miriam and Alan traveling around Scotland deserves a medal. Light relief and brilliant viewing.’

Another chimed in with: ‘What a great watch this is. I love Miriam anyway but her and Alan have a lovely friendship.’

Miriam memorably played Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films, while Alan was a Bond villain, Boris Grishenko in GoldenEye, and their common ground is that they both have Scottish roots.

Miriam and Alan: Lost in Scotland airs every Tuesday at 9.15pm on Channel 4.
