Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has revealed he was told he was ‘too big’ to play a zombie on The Walking Dead, after reportedly trying to join the TV series ‘for years’.
Later this year, Justice League director Zack Snyder is releasing a new film called Army of the Dead, a zombie heist film that stars Dave as the lead alongside Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera and Garret Dillahunt.
During a recent interview, Dave, 52, admitted that he is a big ‘zombie fan’, so much so that he offered to join the cast of The Walking Dead for free.
However, the retired professional wrestler said that he was turned down because his physique was considered too large for him to portray a zombie.
‘I tried to get on Walking Dead for years, I said I would come and play a zombie for free, but they said, “You’re too big!”,’ he told Empire magazine.
If Dave’s portrayal of Drax in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is anything to go by, he’s definitely proven his versatility.
While he didn’t get a chance to show he could pull off playing an undead character, Dave is looking forward to his role as Scott Ward in Army of the Dead, which sees him bring a group of people together for a heist in Las Vegas in a zombie-ravished world.
The actor said ‘there had to be something special about a zombie film for me to sign up’ – and it appears he’s found it.
‘What sets us apart is the heist. But there’s a whole bunch of different layers to this film,’ he stated.
There isn’t long to wait until new episodes from season 10 of The Walking Dead arrive, which will explore the backstory of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), whose wife Lucille is played by the actor’s actual wife, Hilarie Burton.
The first photo from The Walking Dead’s 11th and final season was recently released, showing a behind-the-scenes shot from the production.
Earlier this year, Dave poked fun at the idea of him and fellow wrestler-turned-actor John Cena starring in a movie together.
In response to a tweet shared by a fan who said they would ‘love to see a @JohnCena @DaveBautista Buddy Move’, Dave wrote: ‘You and you both!’
New episodes of The Walking Dead are due to premiere on March 1 on FOX in the UK.
