Dragons’ Den newcomer Steven Bartlett and Peter Jones trade blows in heated clash over enticing business

Things got heated on the latest episode of Dragons’ Den as new star Steven Bartlett and longest-serving investor Peter Jones traded insults while battling it out for an eco business.

On Thursday evening, husband and wife duo Joel and Nicki Buckley appeared on the BBC programme to promote their sustainable DIY company EcoUnion Ltd, asking for an £85,000 investment for 10% of the business.

All five of the Dragons were impressed with both the couple and the business, as they were forced to make a tough decision amid multiple offers.

However, before money was put on the table, Steven and Peter clashed in a heated exchange, with the latter bemused by the notion that Joel and Nicki were interested in going with the newcomer due to his social media marketing background.

‘One of the things that’s important to us is educating, getting the message out and working on the digital side,’ Nicki explained, prompting Steven to reply: ‘So you’re saying you want me.’

‘I’m saying that that’s definitely an area that is important to educating our customer base,’ Nicki added, as Peter then piped up to say to the couple: ‘I think you’ve lost the plot.’

‘Because they want me?’ Steven asked as Peter continued, telling the entrepreneurs that in his opinion, they were ‘making the wrong decisions already’.

At this point, Steven and Peter began talking over each other, as the former said he wanted to ‘continue my line of questioning’, while the latter questioned why Joel and Nicki would want to go with Steven after being in the Den for ‘five minutes’.

‘Hang on, one at a time!’ Nicki chimed in as she tried to make sense of the situation.

Peter had then had enough, presenting them with their first offer after making a jibe about Steven being the ‘new upstart’, prompting his colleague to burst into laughter.

In the end, following offers from Peter, Deborah Meaden, Sara Davies and Touker Suleyman, the entrepreneurs decided to go with Deborah due to her expertise with sustainability and DIY, after Peter made the unprecedented move of taking back his offer to urge them to go with their chosen Dragon.

Viewers absolutely loved the sparring between Steven and Peter, with one tweeting: ‘Steven calling Peter a vampire, yeah boi.’

‘Steven Bartlett sure does like to call Peter Jones a vampire for his offers and what percentage he wants,’ someone else said, while another remarked: ‘Steven Bartlett calling Peter Jones a vampire is why I’m back watching Dragon’s Den.’

Dragons’ Den returns next Thursday at 8pm on BBC One and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
