Just a day before claims emerged Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford had been ‘dropped’ from their Friday slot presenting This Morning, the TV stalwart had shared his belief social media trolls ‘knew how’ to have him sacked.
Reports surfaced on Saturday Eamonn had been shafted from the slot he’d hosted for 14 years alongside Ruth, with claims they will be replaced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary.
The night before, in a Facebook live with Belfast Live, Eamonn opened up on the effect social media trolls have on him as he reacted to the backlash he can sometimes get for sharing ‘banter’.
He said: ‘You ask me how I deal with it. Some of them are so pious and pompous, usually I just say “oh bore off”.’
However, Eamonn added: ‘People say it’s water off a duck’s back but people wake up and they know they can get you sacked … that’s the thing about live TV.
‘They know how to get you sacked, they know how to do it, they know how to go about the process of doing it, so obviously it can be very stressful at times.’
He went on: ‘I don’t really care about any cause to stick my neck out totally and say, “I’m gonna take one for the team on this”. I say, “yeah, whatever, fine”.’
Over the weekend, it was reported Eamonn had been left ‘furious’ by the shake-up, however ITV later released a statement explicitly denying a shake-up of the This Morning line-up.
‘We have a stellar presenting line up on This Morning in Holly & Phillip and Eamonn & Ruth,’ a statement read. ‘Any additions to this line up will be announced in due course.’
An insider had earlier claimed to The Mirror: ‘[Alison and Dermot] have real warmth. It’s time for a change and they are perfect. Eamonn is pretty furious and everyone feels for him and Ruth, they are well liked on the team, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made.’
The source also said Eamonn and Ruth will still appear on This Morning, as they’re set to host the main show for six weeks in the summer when regular hosts – Phillip and Holly – take a break over the school holidays.
They added: ‘ITV has been open about wanting to diversify and make the show “less white” but they haven’t tried to find anything else for them.
‘Ruth will remain on Loose Women and they will do school holidays. But Eamonn hasn’t been offered a role anywhere else on the channel, which is a real shame for him.’
Alison has been a roving reporter on the programme for years and is a favourite with fans.
She and X Factor host Dermot were paired as stand-in presenters previously – most recently last month.
