Footballers’ Wives star Laila Rouass predicts overdue return 16 years after axe

Footballers Wives actress Laila Rouass is fully expecting the drama to make an explosive return 16 years after it was axed by ITV.

The 50-year-old Holby City star, who played Amber Gates, was a regular on the racy British show that focused on the fictional Premier League football club Earls Park Football Club, its players, and their partners.

The popular programme, which starred Zöe Lucker and Gillian Taylforth, ran for five seasons from 2002 to 2006 but was cancelled shortly afterwards.

During Wednesday’s edition of Steph McGovern’s Packed Lunch, the presenter couldn’t help but ask Laila whether there’s been talks of bringing the show back.

‘I loved it. I think it will,’ Laila enthused.

‘I think it is actually a great time to bring that back. It was never actually about the football, it was about the wives.’

Speaking over previous storylines, she continued: ‘You’ve got these crazy women who are ambitious and feisty and get up to no good.

‘We’d get the scripts and you’d think “we can’t do that, that’s so farfetched” fast forward two years – every footballer and their grandmother were up to it. We didn’t even touch the sides with our storylines.’

Guest star Denise Van Outen also weighed in on the discussion and revealed that she regretted not being part of the show.

‘It’s one of those shows that I wish I’d done,’ she said.

‘I was asked to do the pilot. But I was doing The Big Breakfast and another job at the time so I was so busy, and I just couldn’t fit it in, so I said no to it.’

Laila and her longtime partner, snooker legend Ronnie O’ Sullivan, recently announced their split on social media.

In a brief statement, she tweeted: ‘After nearly ten years of love and memories, Ronnie I have parted ways. Peace and love to you all. Laila X [sic].’

Laila and the snooker champion did not have children but the actress is mother to 15-year-old daughter Inez, who she shares with former partner Nasir Khan.

The pair never tied the knot despite being engaged for several years and Ronnie, 46, previously suggested that the pair were not in a rush to get married.

‘We’re very casual and laid-back about the whole thing anyway,’ said the sports star.

‘When it happens, it will happen. I love her, I love her company, I admire her.’

Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays at 12.30pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
