Great British Bake Off winner Peter Sawkins recalls his uni flatmates finding out he’d won on night of final

Peter Sawkins, the winner of the Great British Bake Off 2020, has shared what it was like when his university flatmates found out he’d won the show at the same time as the rest of the nation.

On Tuesday evening, Bake Off fans were ecstatic as 20-year-old student Peter was named the winner of Bake Off, the youngest contestant ever to win the show.

While Peter told his family when he won the show earlier this year, his flatmates at Edinburgh University didn’t find out until the final episode of the 11th series of Bake Off aired on TV.

When they finally learnt that their housemate had won the competition, there was ‘lots and lots of cheering’, Peter told BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday.

‘It was great fun, it was just celebrations, lots and lots of cheering, so apologies to the flats above and below,’ he said.

‘It might have been a bit loud just after 9 o’clock… we just watched it as we’ve been watching the whole series. It was really nice, it was quite relaxed.’

The young baker added that it was a ‘shame’ they couldn’t enjoy ‘a big party’.

However, the group of four still had a ‘lovely time’ he said, describing the evening as ‘nice and chilled out’.

‘I made a cake. We ate that alongside it. It was a really lovely time,’ he said.

While Bake Off fans may think Peter’s next venture would involve coming out with his own cookbook, the student has explained he needs to first focus on his university work as his main priority.

‘I’ve got an assignment due next Friday, a couple of exams in two weeks’ time, so I think that’s what’s right next on the agenda!’ he said.

The end montage of the Bake Off final paid tribute to late season 5 star Luis Troyano, in addition to providing viewers with updates on how this year’s contestants have been faring since leaving the tent.

During his radio appearance, Peter shared that they are all part of ‘the Bake Off bubble Whatsapp group’.

‘It’s popping off every day,’ he revealed. ‘We’ve just become a wee family, we’ve got so close so fast.

‘We’re all in together, 24 hours a day and it couldn’t be a better group to share the whole experience with.’

The 2020 series of The Great British Bake Off is available to watch on demand on All4.
