It’s week three and the Great British Bake Off has officially had its first Paul Hollywood handshake.
In tonight’s episode, the 10 remaining bakers stepped into the tent to be faced with the dreaded bread week.
In the signature challenge, the contestants were tasked with baking a crispy and airy focaccia with any topping of their choosing.
Many of the bakers decided to go down the Italian route for their flavours, but one contestant had the upper hand.
Giuseppe decided to channel the flavours of his Italian hometown of Gaeta in his creation and the judges could not help but recognise the authenticity of his bake.
Paul was so wowed by Giuseppe’s focaccia that he decided to give out his first handshake of the series.
Giuseppe was shocked to receive the handshake and was in for another surprise when the judge asked him for his recipe.
Fans online went mad with Paul’s request. ‘Wow, Paul wants the recipe! Well done Giuseppe,’ said one fan.
‘Don’t do it Giuseppe tell him it’s a family secret,’ added another.
‘Giuseppe got a handshake and a ‘This is your recipe? You must give it to me.’ That latter is a first ever. YESSS!,’ wrote a third viewer.
Giuseppe’s streak continued as he also conquered the technical challenge, which also had an Italian element to it.
The bakers were tasked with producing 12 ciabatta breadsticks, and while most bakers delivered underdone bread, Giuseppe’s batch rose to the top and earned him the top spot.
With just the showstopper to go, Giuseppe was en-route to become the week’s star baker.
The third challenge saw the baker tasked with creating a milk bread display, for which Giuseppe created a display of fruit and vegetables which Paul praised for its simplicity.
As fans foresaw, Giuseppe’s astonishing performance in all three challenges made him this week’s star baker.
Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
