Gregg Wallace has explained how the judges will taste contestants’ food on MasterChef: The Professionals, as the cookery competition was filmed with Covid restrictions in place.
Gregg is back alongside Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti to put professional chefs to the test in a new series which starts November 10.
Filming took place amid the coronavirus pandemic which presented some challenges when it came to eating.
Viewers normally see Gregg, Marcus and Monica dive into the same plate to test whatever a contestant has cooked up, but things obviously had to be done a little differently this year.
The presenter added that the hardest part of filming was not being able to have close contact with members of the crew he has known for years.
On Tuesday’s Loose Women, the TV star explained: ‘Cooking is not a group activity really. It’s quite singular.
‘What I found really difficult wasn’t the actual filming – I’ve been doing MasterChef now for 17 years – it’s not being able to shake hands or put me arm around people, camera men, soundies, directors, that I’ve been mates with for 15 years.
‘You go in and go, “Oh hello!” and then you go oh…hello, kind of almost high five. That’s the tricky bit.’
Turning to how the food will be tried, he went on: ‘Me, Marcus and Monica used to elbow each other out the way round the plate, now we go up like a buffet and we take a bit out of each plate.
‘The chefs cook then with clean cutlery we take a bit off and then take it away. Slightly different but not majorly different.’
The new series, which was originally launched in 2008, comes as the hospitality struggles with the impact of the pandemic.
Gregg, who is passionate about the topic, urged people to utilise their favourite restaurants if they are offering takeaways during the second lockdown.
