Grey’s Anatomy reunites Meredith with George O’Malley and T.R. Knight says filming was ’emotional’

Grey’s Anatomy fans had another one of their reunion prayers answered as Meredith reunited with George O’Malley on her dream beach.

Season 17 continued to get us right in the feels when the one and only T. R. Knight made his return as 007 for a touching scene in episode four.

Fans around the world were left heartbroken when the character died of the most tragic deaths in the show’s history in 2009. Yes, eleven seasons ago!

However, as Meredith battles Covid-19 in the current season, the character has been able to enjoy the most heartwarming reunions with both her late husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and her BFF George.

Things were made all the more special when the only other original cast who had worked with George, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) also joined the reunion on the beach.

T. R. Knight opened up about filming scenes for the show again as he told Deadline: ‘Even though we filmed this in the middle of October, I’m still trying to put into words how profound the experience was for me, so just hearing that made my eyes leak saltwater a little bit.

‘When [showrunner Krista Vernoff] first gave me the pages, Bailey was not in it yet, I think Richard was. And then I got the second round. It’s just hard for me to put into words, still, how meaningful it was.’

He added about the ’emotional’ moment : ‘It was incredible, it was just an overwhelming feeling of love in that moment. We were apart from everybody quite a bit because that was a drone shot, and so it was just the four of us, and the sun was setting, and this big fly buzzing around our heads, and it filled me with just a lot of joy.’

The Flight Attendant star then gushed about his co-stars as he added: ‘To have Ellen, and Chandra, and Jim, of course, and all the other familiar faces that were there, too, because there were quite a bit of crew that were there still. To have all of that, it was just unlike any other experience I’ve ever had in my entire life, in my 47 years.

‘To act with Ellen, it’s one of those things you wish it always happened but then it wouldn’t be special when it did, to act with someone who you just know that it’s like, okay, what are you going to give me there. Okay, now I’m going to try to match that, and then it’s this game. It’s this rollercoaster that you’re on together.

He gushed: ‘To be able to experience that again with Ellen, and to know that every take is going to be different, there’s going to be a sense of play, a sense of challenge. It’s the best kind of acting, if that makes sense.’

Now fans are being left wishing even more departed characters (dead and alive) from the show’s history make a return this season.

Indeed, some eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the IMDb dates for some characters had been updated to include 2020.

As well as Patrick Dempsey and T. R. Knight, actors such as Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang), Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens), and Jeffrey Dean Morgan – who famously guest-starred as Denny Duquette Jr. have also had their dates updated.

However, fan favorites Chyler Leigh (Lexie Grey) and Eric Dane (Mark Sloan) are not included in that list. Sob!

Fingers crossed the surprises we all hope for are still on the way this season.
