Hawkeye episode 5 recap: Fans ‘screaming’ as iconic Marvel villain revealed amid Yelena Belova drama

There’s only one episode left to go of the epic Marvel show (Picture: Disney+)

Warning: spoilers ahead for Hawkeye episode 5 on Disney Plus.

Bitter truths have been spilt in episode five of Hawkeye, as Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) deal with the repercussions of their fall-out amid the emergence of a returning Marvel villain.

Last week, Clint and Kate came to blows with two formidable opponents, as they fought Echo (Alaqua Cox) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) at the same time.

Both Maya and Yelena are out for vengeance, with the former desperate to avenge the death of her father at Ronin’s hands and Yelena wanting revenge for the death of her sister Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), for which she blames Clint.

With only one episode to go, there are numerous loose ends that need tying up… but the latest episode of Hawkeye also provides a whole lot of answers.

Marvel villain’s return is finally confirmed

It’s been rumoured for weeks, with clues sprinkled into various Hawkeye episodes.

However, today it was finally confirmed that the one and only Kingpin is back, with Vincent D’Onofrio returning as Wilson Fisk, a character he first played in the Netflix Daredevil series.

At the end of episode five, Kate receives a message from an unknown number, presumably belonging to Yelena, who shares a picture revealing that Kate’s mum Eleanor (Vera Farmiga) is in cahoots with the Marvel villain, dressed in his signature white suit.

Fans were ecstatic over Kingpin’s return, with several saying they were ‘screaming’ over the big reveal.

‘I’m so surprised they actually showed a picture of Kingpin I didn’t think we would get anything until the finale,’ one person tweeted in shock.

‘Had to run a few laps around the living room after seeing Kingpin ngl,’ another said.

We’re crossing our fingers this means extremely good things for the return of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, not to mention other characters from the Netflix Marvel shows.

Yelena Belova faces off with Kate Bishop

After Clint and Kate’s intense brawl with Echo and Yelena, the Black Widow assassin decided to pay the young archer a visit at her apartment for a chat.

Yelena unnerves Kate with her somewhat friendly demeanour, serving her up boxed mac and cheese as they sit down for a chinwag.

It’s then that Yelena reveals why she’s on a mission to kill Clint, brushing aside his previous heroics as she explains to Kate that she’s Natasha Romanoff’s sister.

At the start of the episode, Yelena is on a mission to help other Black Widows who have been brainwashed when she disintegrates during the Blip, before coming back five years later.

With her first thought being to let Natasha know that she’s ok, we can only imagine the devastation she must have felt when she found out that her sister had died, with Clint at her side.

Clint Barton adopts the Ronin mask once more

All Clint wants is to be able to go home to his wife and kids for the Christmas holidays.

However, the longer he stays in New York, the more he realises just how complex the situation he has found himself in really is, as Maya and Yelena are both hot on his tail.

The Avenger arrives to meet Echo, taking out her Tracksuit Mafia henchmen before facing her, dressed in his old Ronin gear.

After beating Maya in their brutal fight, with a little help from Kate, Clint reveals his true identity, before sharing some harsh truths.

Maya Lopez questions the truth of her father’s death

Clint informs Maya that the person who hired him to kill her father – who used to be in charge of the Tracksuit Mafia – was in fact her boss.

Maya initially believes that Hawkeye is lying, but seeds of doubt begin to grow after he disappears.

Turning to her right-hand man Kazi (Fra Free), she asks him where he was on the night that her father died, as he apparently wasn’t at the meeting with everyone else.

This could mean that Maya is going to investigate her father’s death further, and perhaps find out exactly how Kingpin was involved.

Could we end up seeing Echo team up with Hawkeye, Kate and Yelena for a Kingpin showdown?

Hawkeye is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
