Warning: spoilers ahead for Hawkeye.

Hawkeye star Hailee Steinfeld has teased ‘heartbreak’ in the episode 6 finale of the Marvel series on Disney Plus, as villains come out of the woodwork.

In the fifth episode of the explosive show, Kate Bishop (Hailee) was informed by Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) that her mother Eleanor Bishop (Vera Farmiga), who runs a security company, was in cahoots with Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio).

The young archer shared this revelation with Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), who warned how dangerous Daredevil baddie Kingpin – aka Wilson Fisk – really was.

Ahead of the finale, Hailee broke down Kate’s discovery of her mother’s secret, villainous connection, saying that it was ‘heartbreaking’ that the ‘one person that Kate has been trying to protect this whole time is now not to be trusted and possibly not to be protected’.

Exploring how she felt about her character’s storyline with The Hollywood Reporter, she said: ‘Maybe Kate is meant to be protected against her. So I think I was more scared for her than I felt sorry.’

Hailee emphasised how quickly Kate has had to grow up, having lost her dad during the Battle of New York in 2012 and then accidentally become embroiled in the world of underground crime in Hawkeye.

‘We learn this piece of information and though a lot of weight comes with that, we don’t know much more,’ the 25-year-old said.

‘So before feeling sorry, I think I was more curious to find out more information, while being terrified for her and what her mom, at that point, is capable of.’

With numerous theories around the finale swirling around the internet, one particularly interesting one is the idea that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could make an appearance.

Florence fuelled speculation of the cameo by including a spider’s web emoji in the caption for a Hawkeye-related Instagram post.

There are several connections between the webslinger and the Hawkeye TV show, including the fact that the newly tweaked Statue of Liberty – which now holds Captain America’s shield – is either seen or referenced in both.

Whether we will see Peter Parker in action on Disney Plus – or even Charlie Cox’s Daredevil (which we’re praying for desperately) – remains to be seen.

The season finale of Hawkeye airs on Wednesday on Disney Plus.
