After what feels like years of teasing, How I Met Your Father is finally landing on Disney+ in the UK this week, introducing us all to our latest obsession.
The spin-off of beloved sitcom How I Met Your Mother stars Hilary Duff as Sophie, a woman living in modern-day New York, hoping to find love and a close-knit group of friends.
Of course, it’s not quite as straightforward as the first swipe on Tinder, as things quickly become complicated and feelings end up all over the place, with more than a few laughs added in.
The original series became a firm fan favorite and, despite seeing a completely different group of characters living it up in different hangouts, there are definitely a few Easter eggs in there to satisfy OG viewers – including the return of Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily’s (Alyson Hannigan) apartment.
Chatting to Metro.co.uk on the importance of those moments ahead of the release on May 11, creators Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger explained that they want to continue that down the line in future episodes.
‘We wanted to make really clear with the reveal of the apartment that we exist in the same world as the original series,’ Elizabeth told us. ‘That means that maybe you’ll see places that the original cast went to, maybe you’ll even see original cast members down the line.
‘All of those things are totally possible. I think we deliver on that notion in a really satisfying, exciting way in our first season. And hopefully we’ll continue to in future seasons down the line.’
Speaking of possible cameos down the line, she continued: ‘Kim Cattrall was such a huge casting get for us and so exciting. We hope that the show continues to attract really exciting actors.
‘We feel like we’ve been really lucky so far in terms of who we’ve got and we just love to populate the world with talented people that we’re fans of, so we’re always looking for those opportunities.
‘We’re always looking for those opportunities to satisfy fans of the original. So that’s something that we remain committed to finding.’
Hilary leads a star-studded cast as Sophie, including Tien Tran, Christopher Lowell, Josh Peck and Leighton Meester.
The official synopsis for the sitcom reads: ‘In the near future, Sophie (Hilary Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.’
However, the pair refused to be drawn on whether we’ve already been introduced to the Father…
‘We can’t tell you that,’ Elizabeth understandably added. ‘We have, from the jump, said that in our pilot we are showing the story of the night she met the Father.
‘So you definitely met possibilities. But perhaps there are parts of that night that we haven’t yet seen…
‘We wanted to choose our language really clearly and we will stick to it and honor what we set up for that notion.’
We need answers ASAP.
How I Met Your Father will launching on Disney+ on Wednesday 11 May.
