Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnely have been criticised by Peta for the new I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! advert, which has been the subject of a backlash online.
The pair shared a video of themselves on promotional duties for the upcoming series in Gwyrch Castle, North Wales.
In the footage, Ant can be seen dressed as a knight, sat on the back of what looks to be a Shetland pony. The presenter joked about the horse doing ‘a little dance’ while riding the animal.
Dec is also dressed as a knight and sits on top of a much larger white horse.
Fans voiced their concerns over the video, claiming Ant was ‘too big’ for it, and now animal rights charity Peta have voiced their concerns over the clip.
Peta’s Director Elisa Allen said in a statement: ‘Is there anything I’m A Celebrity wouldn’t do in a desperate attempt to get cheap laughs at the expense of animals’ welfare?
‘This stunt caused a Shetland pony to struggle and risk acute back pain and even lameness.’
She added: ‘Peta urges the show’s producers to find more creative and humane ways of introducing its absurd antics and to leave animals in peace.’
Fans previously hit out at the footage online, with one commenting: ‘Sorry, love you two usually but that’s not right.’
Another said: ‘Ant is far too big/heavy for that little pony much as I love A&D this is cruel & not at all funny!!’
A spokesperson for I’m A Celebrity told Metro.co.uk: ‘The pony used in the promo is professionally trained to work in the film and television industry.
Throughout the shoot the horse master and a team of expert handlers were on location at all times. The safety and wellbeing of the horses and pony used for filming were of utmost priority to everyone.’
Elsewhere, it was previously confirmed that the I’m a Celeb stars and crew have been warned not to harm the bats flying around at Gwrych Castle.
The ITV series – which is hosted by Ant and Dec – will be filmed at the castle in Abergele, Wales for the second year running rather than its usual camp Down Under in Australia due to the pandemic.
I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! returns to ITV later this year.
