It’s A Sin star Olly Alexander has said that he was the ‘only person to audition’ to play Ritchie Tozer in the widely-lauded series… and we can’t imagine anyone else doing the role justice.
Earlier this year, Russell T Davies’ series It’s A Sin was released to critical acclaim, telling the story of a group of young gay men and their friends in 1980s London whose circle is torn apart by the Aids crisis.
Years and Years singer Olly portrayed Ritchie, an aspiring actor who moves out of his family home on the Isle of Wight to chase his dreams.
During an appearance on Friday’s edition of This Morning, the 30-year-old explained to Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond that he had to audition for the part.
After Dermot described the show as ‘so good, so important and so human,’ Olly said: ‘I did audition, yeah. I got an email from my agent saying Russell T Davies is making a new show, wants to meet you for the part of Ritchie and instantly I was like, “Oh my gosh, that would be so amazing, I love Russell, I love his work.” I was like, “I’m in, I’m in.”’
After expressing his strong interest in the part, Olly went and met Russell… and the rest is history.

‘And I went and met him and I read for the part. Russell did say I was the only person that auditioned, so…’ Olly said.
Alison was shocked by the news that Olly was apparently the only person to audition for Ritchie, stating incredulously: ‘Really?!’
‘Yeah!’ Olly replied excitedly.

Dermot speculated that after Olly read for the role, Russell thought to himself: ‘That’s it, we know.’
‘You’ve got to audition, I had to audition,’ Olly added humbly.
Russell recently confirmed that It’s A Sin won’t be returning for a second season, stating: ‘It said everything I wanted to say.’
Earlier this month, the stars of It’s A Sin delighted fans when they reunited at Sir Elton John’s annual Aids Foundation Oscar party.
Lydia West, Nathaniel Curtis, Callum Scott Howells and Omari Douglas, who played Jill, Ash, Colin and Roscoe respectively, were filmed dancing joyfully to Sir Elton’s classic hit Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting).
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and It’s A Sin is available to watch on All4.
