Jake’s chat with Liberty confused fans (Picture: ITV/)
In a rare moment of self-awareness for the ITV2 show, Liberty addressed her boyfriend’s apparent instructions to ‘remember they’re on television’ in Thursday night’s episode.
Viewers were confused as Jake held back Liberty from joining the rest of the villa in congratulating her best friend Kaz Kamwi on going exclusive with Tyler Cruickshank.
The 24-year-old told Liberty that her friend would come over to her – leading many to believe he was attempting to stage a separate scene for the four of them.
Liberty, 21, addressed the situation later in bed, and said: ‘I know you say sometimes, like, remember we are on a TV show but at the same time what makes it good is just you being yourself, do you know what I mean?
‘And tonight, me wanting to run up and hug Kaz as soon as she came down the stairs, it was a natural reaction for me.’
Jake appeared frustrated, replying: ‘Yeah, my god, serious? I just thought it would be nice for you to have your own alone time with Kaz not with everyone there.’
The TV comment pricked everybody’s ears up, including series three islander Sam, who tweeted: ‘So a little tv knowledge for u here… when filming ur strictly not [allowed] to talk about “been on camera” or anything related to been on tv [sic].
‘So for love island to actually air lib saying that Jake must have been playing up to the camera for some time believe me.’
His Geordie Shore castmate Holly Hagan quote-tweeted the post, adding: ‘This is fact.’

It is unclear if this rule still applies to Love Island, or was only a rule during Sam’s time on MTV’s Geordie Shore.
Other rules in the villa include a two alcoholic drink maximum limit each night, no masturbating, no sex without a condom, and no taking off mic packs.
Jake and Liberty have been together since day one of the show, and made things official earlier in the series.
However, things look rockier than ever with just over a week until the final, after Jake’s heart rate was raised the most by Millie Court in the heart rate monitor challenge.
In a teaser for Friday night’s episode, Jake is heard telling his girlfriend that he can find other women attractive but ‘you are my girlfriend’.
Liberty says: ‘I do feel like since the whole rip the clothes off comment, I’ve been noticing a lot of similar things that have accumulated.’
But will they really break things off so close to the finish line?
Love Island continues at 9pm on ITV2.
