Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper may remain in hospital until December 2021 as he continues to fight for recovery.
The 53-year-old was taken to hospital in March last year after contracting coronavirus, and was later placed into a coma when the bug left him with kidney failure, liver damage and heart failure.
While he is now out of his coma, Derek continues to struggle to talk and his muscles have depleted from remaining in a hospital bed, losing a dramatic amount of weight as well.
In last night’s documentary Finding Derek, Kate welcomed cameras into her family’s life as they coped as a family.
Towards the end of the film, a title card read: ‘His doctors have extended the option of keeping him in hospital… until December 2021.’
The news must come as a blow to Kate, who is raising their two children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, without her husband around.

She praised the kids for remaining so positive throughout the devastating time, and the film saw them showing off their latest Lego builds and dance routines to their dad via Facetime.
The heartbreaking documentary was praised by viewers as Kate spoke openly and honestly about the effect Derek’s condition has had on her and her family – but remained determined to fight for her husband throughout.
Derek and Kate have been married for 16 years, and despite someone saying ‘she could get out of the relationship because this wasn’t what she signed up for’, the Good Morning Britain host vows to stick to her ‘in sickness and in health’ vows.

‘He is still Derek. He is still him and he’s still that person that you love. But he will behave differently and he will by physically different. So, will I be ok?’ she said.
‘I won’t be delighted because I wouldn’t wish that on him.
‘I think it will be very tough on us both but he is, for better for worse… you know, I’m trying to look at it as a rather beautiful thing.
‘I feel as though we might have to fall in love again.’
Towards the end of the documentary, Derek was beginning to recover, and was heard telling the camera: ‘Thank you and I love you forever and a day.’
