Line Of Duty star Tommy Jessop has revealed a sweet gesture Vicky McClure made as they filmed the high-octane lake crash scenes.

The actor, who played Terry Boyle in Jed Mercurio’s acclaimed police drama for two seasons, was a major player in the latest chapter as he became the main suspect Gail Vella’s murder inquiry.

In episode three of the latest chapter, Ryan Pilkington (Gregory Piper) crashed a police vehicle into a lake in an attempt to silence Terry. He then proceeded to drown fellow cop Lisa Patel (Tara Divina) before turning his attentions to Terry.

Luckily, Vicky’s Kate Fleming arrived on the scene just in the nick of time and saved Terry from being killed off.

Speaking about filming the hair-raising moment, Tommy revealed ‘it was like living in a freezer’ but he had his co-star Vicky to help keep him toasty.

‘In order to warm up, my highlight was Vicky McClure giving me a nice warm hug,’ he told Mencap.

He added that he did film some of the crash scenes in the lake himself.

‘The body double got drowned by Ryan,’ Tommy explained.

Elsewhere, he opened up on the importance of casting special needs actors in high-profile television shows.

Tommy is a vulnerable adult with Down’s syndrome like his character Terry.

‘It really is important to include people with learning disabilities of all ages to show what they truly are capable of because I really do want people to believe in us,’ Tommy said.

‘We really are all different people with different skills and ambitions.’

He added that he was thrilled to be involved with Line Of Duty, saying: ‘I really am grateful to Jed for such a brilliant role.’

Tommy starred alongside his real-life mum in the last episode of Line Of Duty series six.

Following the instalment, Tommy’s brother revealed on social media that their real-life mother Jane had bagged herself a cameo role and was the woman helping Terry  out of the car in the scene.

‘YES! HAPPY ENDING FOR TERRY! And this is our Mum @jane_jessop helping him out of the car!!!’ he penned.

Line Of Duty is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
