Love Island 2022 fans puzzled by twist and come up with wild alternative

Love Island 2022 has already featured a huge twist in its first episode – but fans have been left a little baffled by it.

The first episode of the ITV dating show traditionally sees the girls lining up and the boys taking their pick for the very first coupling. However, this year they don’t have a say.

Instead, the couples were decided for them in a public vote.

However, fans have been left a little confused, with some wondering when exactly the vote happened – and why the islanders weren’t asked their picks before revealing who they’d been coupled up with (for maximum chaos of course).

‘Did i miss something i don’t remember a vote,’ one viewer said, while another added: ‘I didn’t even know we got to vote’.

‘Umm when did the public vote for the islanders,’ another asked.

One more viewer added: ‘Getting the public to vote for who people should couple up with is one of the stupidest changes ever, I want the awkwardness of the step forward as does the entire nation.’

‘I’d like the contestants to pick who they want to couple up with AND then tell the public has already decided for them,’ one more said.

‘They should’ve let the guys pick first then announce public vote for maximum chaos,’ one more said.

Love Island advertised the public vote, which took place on the app, on June 3, three days before the first episode.

‘For the first time ever, you get to have your say on who couples up on Day 1!’ the tweet read. ‘Head to the app to play matchmaker and pick which boy you think should couple up with each girl. The polls will close at 9am Saturday.’

Safe to say the vote has already provided some awkward moments, including Amber Beckford quipping that Dami Hope ‘didn’t have a choice’ other than to couple up with her while Gemma Owen and Liam Llewellyn shared a very awkward hug.

Narrator Iain Stirling previously explained the twist to Christine McGuinness on Lorraine.

He said: ‘I’m coming at you now with a big fat exclusive. We’re mixing things up this year I can tell you.

‘This year, for the first year ever we want you guys at home to play Cupid, and you will have your say on which boy couples up with which girl.

‘All you have to do is go over to the Love Island app right now and decide who you want to couple up with who.’

As for how the couples will pan out, only time will tell…

Love Island continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV2.
