Mare Of Easttown episode 5 delivered a plot twist of epic proportions in scenes that arrived on Sunday, with Evan Peters’ character Detective Colin Zabel being shot dead.
The detective was killed in jaw-dropping scenes just minutes after he and Mare (Kate Winslet) honed in on their suspect, who has kidnapped two young women and may be responsible for the abduction and murder Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny).
While viewers are still struggling to come to terms with the savage curve ball, Evan has weighed in on Colin’s dramatic exit.
‘I like the idea that he gets shot because it’s so real,’ Evan said of the murder.
‘That’s the way sickness and death is. It hits you in the most unexpected ways. You never plan to get sick. You never plan to die. It all just happens.’
Discussing the moment he learned his character wasn’t going to survive the series, he continued: ‘Well, I got the scripts for episodes one through five or maybe six, and read them all. And obviously he dies in five.

‘I was absolutely shocked when I read it, and I hoped and kind of knew that the audience would be shocked too, if we did Colin right.’
Colin had become an integral part of the storyline at the time of his death, having expressed his feelings towards Mare and uncovering important leads in the murder case.
‘I was excited by the idea that that would happen, to craft this whole character and formulate this whole plot so it’s almost like we did it for that moment,’ Evan added to the New York Times.
‘It’s this interesting way to develop a character, knowing that he’s going to die in such a way.’
We’re not quite sure what to do with ourselves now…
