Phillip Schofield blasts Boris Johnson’s ‘tactic of not answering questions’ as ‘unacceptable’ amid latest No 10 lockdown party leak

Phillip Schofield has lambasted Boris Johnson for his ‘blatantly obvious tactic of not answering questions’ following the latest controversy surrounding a Downing Street party during the first Covid-19 lockdown.

This week, a leaked email allegedly showed that 100 Downing Street staff were invited to a ‘bring your own booze’ party in the No 10 garden, which is said to have been attended by 40 workers, including the Prime Minister and his wife, Carrie Symonds.

Downing Street said they would not be commenting due to the Sue Gray inquiry into alleged government parties, while when questioned by a reporter on his attendance, Mr Johnson replied: ‘All that is subject to the proper investigation by Sue Gray,’ while smiling and laughing in an apparent nervous manner.

During Tuesday’s edition of This Morning, Phillip and Holly Willoughby welcomed Matthew Wright and Julia Hartley-Brewer onto the show to discuss the latest headlines, including the leaked email about the supposed party.

After showing the clip of the PM dodging the question about if he was at the party and if he has been interviewed by Ms Gray, Phillip remarked that the politician’s tendency to ‘not actually answer questions’ has been seen on multiple occasions.

Addressing Matthew, he said: ‘Matthew, isn’t it the case now, we’ve seen the Prime Minister’s tactic of not actually answering questions a number of times, but everybody’s wise to that now, it’s just so blatantly obvious when you see that tactic being employed, that this time, it’s unacceptable.’

Earlier during their conversation, Phillip outlined how they had been looking at their phones to see what they were up to on May 20 2020, on the date of the alleged No 10 party.

‘We were all looking through our phones today to see what we were doing on the 20th, and we were all sitting in our different houses, the rest of the family, we were all on Zoom calls, because we weren’t allowed to be together. Police forces at that time actively reminding the public to adhere to the rules, especially during the lovely weather, we all remember how strict people became,’ he said.

Continuing, he said to Matthew: ‘The thing is Matthew, you do this to us, we’re all doing as we’re told, but you’re not, you do this to us, all credibility gone, don’t ask us to do anything else. Because that’s it now. No. We won’t.’

Holly, meanwhile, described the fact that the email has only just been leaked, having been sent to 100 Downing Street staff, as ‘extraordinary’, as Matthew and Julia expressed their opinion that Mr Johnson should resign.

The Tory leader has previously denied wrongdoing, saying he followed Covid restrictions at all times.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
