Robbie Williams recalls viral moment when he sang to Ayda Field during labour: ‘It was a joke Mumsnet!’

Robbie Williams has addressed the time he went viral for singing Frozen to his wife, Ayda Field, while she was giving birth to their second child, explaining that she was ‘in on the joke’.

On Friday evening, Robbie, 46, joined Alex Jones and Alex Scott on BBC’s The One Show, the trio sitting in the studio at an adequate distance from one another.

During the show, they discussed the moment in 2014 when Robbie live-tweeted his wife’s labour, part of which involved singing Frozen song Let It Go as she lay in bed.

The singer recalled to The One Show presenters how he discovered that he had gone viral at the time, with news outlets in America ‘presenting’ him as ‘this idiot being horrific with his wife’.

However, Ayda, who was on The X-Factor judging panel alongside her husband in 2018, was ‘in on the joke’, Robbie said.

‘We did five or six of those little sketches all the way through the delivery, because we were like, bored, and then we made each other laugh,’ he recollected.

‘She’s a comedic actress and it was getting more extreme and more extreme. And she was like, “Let’s do it while I’m giving birth,” and I’m like, “Yeah that’ll be brilliant”.’

Robbie said that after their child Charlie was delivered, ‘someone from the next ward came in and said, “You’ve just been on the news in America and they just showed that”.’

After discussing how viral the moment became, with millions of people watching the clip, Robbie addressed parent blogging site Mumsnet directly about the way he was perceived when the video was released in 2014.

‘I’ve got a message for you Mumset – it was a joke, Mumsnet,’ he stated, looking at the camera.

‘Mumsnet – it was a joke! She was in on it!’

Robbie said he was ‘glad’ he could clear things up on the show, stating: ‘I’m glad that I could rectify that situation.’

During his appearance on The One Show, the singer also took the opportunity to shade the music of his former Take That bandmate Gary Barlow.

While Robbie was being questioned about Alex Jones about his Christmas music, the television presenter said that Robbie had himself acknowledged that he doesn’t expect to go to number one this December.

She added that Gary will also be making an appearance on The One Show in a couple of weeks to promote his new music.

The singer then shook his head, adding: ‘No way.’

The One Show airs on weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
