Romesh Ranganathan has revealed Anne Robinson still hasn’t reached out to him since he took over as host of The Weakest Link.
The comedian, 43, is the new host of the rebooted version of the classic quiz show after Anne, 77, took over as host of Countdown.
Appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Romesh revealed: ‘She hasn’t reached out. Erm… she hasn’t punched me either!
‘She’s sort of said: “I think he’ll be good”… which is nice. She’s got Countdown which is great, the announcements happened at the same time.
‘She got announced as the host of Countdown at the same time I was announced as host of the Weakest Link and she did say, actually, “I think he’ll be a good choice.”’
Anne was known for her wink on the show, which Romesh has promised he won’t emulate, adding: ‘The amount of time we spent talking about that, I can’t even begin to tell you.
‘We were talking about how to do it because there’s iconic elements to the show and the hours I spent on Zoom meetings going: “Should you do it? If you don’t do it, what should you do? Should you try and blink? Should you try a wave, maybe jazz hands?”
‘We talked about that almost more than anything else.’
He revealed he does reference the wink in the first episode but then it changes to something else for the rest of the show, which is yet to be revealed.
Romesh previously confirmed that he would not be copying Anne’s style, telling metro.co.uk and other press: ‘I mean, Anne was amazing at it and she was a big reason why that show was so popular [because of] the way that she did it.
‘I don’t think any good can come from trying to emulate that… it’s just for me to do it in my own way.
‘The fact of the matter is, that the format is bulletproof, the quiz is amazing, so if you’re into the quiz, you’ll get the Weakest Link, you’ll 100% get what you’re after.’
