Silent Witness star Amanda Burton teases Sam Ryan’s true motives as fans share suspicions: ‘Who is she working for?’

Silent Witness favourite Amanda Burton returned as Professor Sam Ryan in a dramatic instalment on Monday night, but what is she really up to?

Fans were delighted to see Sam back on-screen after 18 years away, where she was immediately plunged straight back into the centre of the action.

She called upon her successor Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) for help after her husband Jomo (Hugh Quarshie) was wounded in a shooting that killed the health secretary.

However, with the first instalment raising many more questions than it answered, actress Amanda has hinted there could be ulterior motives from her beloved character.

Chatting at a recent screening, she addressed a potentially darker side to her character which could be set to emerge.

She told Metro.co.uk and other press: ‘Is Sam really telling the truth? Who is she working for? It’s very intriguing because she’s always been so much on the right side and has always had such integrity for the truth and all the rest of it.

‘Now, we’re sort of seeing that she could be a bit of a double-edged sword,’ she explained.

Her co-star Emilia weighed in: ‘It’s awkward, because they have mutual respect for each other, and are curious about each other. Then almost immediately, Jack (David Caves) and Nikki are thinking, “Why have we been brought into this? And are we being handled and can we trust Sam?”

‘But of course, as Amanda rightly said, [Sam] has always been on the right side of justice and that’s where Jack and Nikki and Simone stand.’

She concluded: ‘We want to trust Sam, but there is definitely something going on.

It’s not just Nikki and Jack who have their suspicions, with fans also questioning The Lyell’s original pathologist after the episode was broadcast.

One commented on Twitter: ‘What an episode, obsessed with Sam Ryan, that scene with Nikki and the look she gave as the phone rang has got me questioning everything right now #SilentWitness.’

A viewer wrote: ‘Great to see #SilentWitness back on @BBCOne with @EmiliaFox @MrDavidCaves @GenesisLynea As always some twists and turns in tonight’s 1st episode and fun to have Sam Ryan return….but can she be trusted!?!’

Someone else shared: Sam’s a wrong ‘un in this and if Nicky wasn’t so daft over Jack she’d realise it #SilentWitness.’

‘Sorry I know she’s the OG but I am not trusting Sam Ryan in this.  She’s up to something #SilentWitness,’ echoed another.

But just what is Sam really up to?

Silent Witness continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
