No disrespect meant to the Queen of Christmas, Mariah Carey, but long before she stepped up to the plate, there was already pop royalty who was known for festive bangers.

In his career which has spanned over six decades, Sir Cliff Richard has sold more than 250 million records worldwide – making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time – and his Christmas hits helped find him a new audience years into his career.

As the star sits down for a candid chat with Piers Morgan tonight – covering everything from his career to childhood bullies – let’s look at the life and legend of Sir Cliff Richard…

Where was Cliff Richard born?

Cliff Richard was born Harry Rodger Webb in in Lucknow, which was then part of British India.

In 1948, following Indian independence, the family and took a three-week voyage to Tilbury, Essex aboard the SS Ranchi.

Cliff Richard and his family later settled in Carshalton in Surrey.

How old is Cliff Richard?

Born on October 14, 1940, Cliff turned 80 this year.

Richard began his career with his debut single Move It, which he released at just age 18 in 1958.

His first UK number one was his fifth single Living Doll, hitting the top spot in August 1959, spending 6 weeks at the summit and becoming the UK’s highest selling single of 1959.

Throughout his lengthy career, Sir Cliff has released 45 studio albums.

One of Sir Cliff’s achievements includes matching the Spice Girls and the Beatles for having the most Christmas number one singles.

Cliff has spent four Christmases at number one; two as a solo act, one with his band The Shadows and one as part of Band Aid.

These were I Love You (with The Shadows) in 1960, Mistletoe and Wine in 1988, Do They Know it’s Christmas with Band Aid II in 1989 and Saviours’ Day in 1990.

He might be best known for his music, but he has appeared in 12 films, including the iconic musical Summer Holiday, released in 1963.

Other film appearances include the 1966 Thunderbirds are Go and 1961’s The Young Ones.

Sir Cliff, though notoriously private about it, is a self-confessed lifelong bachelor.

In his autobiography, Richard stressed that ‘sex is not one of the things that drives me’ but he has also opened up about past relationships.

In a letter reported on by the Telegraph, Sir Cliff Richard wrote to his first love, Delia Wicks, telling her he had to choose music over love.

The letter, it is reported, said that if he was to be a singer then he had ‘to give up one very priceless thing – the right to have any lasting relationship with any special girl.’

He sent the letter from Australia, where he was on tour, in October 1961.

The letter resurfaced following Delia’s death in 2010 from cancer, aged 71.

Her brother Graham Wicks said that the singer once came to the family home in Leeds while the pair were dating, while he was appearing at the city’s Odeon Cinema.

‘After the show he came to my mum and dad’s for tea and stayed till later on at night. He had a room at The Queens Hotel.

‘There’s always been a question that he was a bit AC/DC,” he added, referring to persistent rumours over Sir Cliff’s sexuality, “but I can assure you he wasn’t. He was just a nice and approachable chap.’

Besides Delia, Sir Cliff was romantically linked to tennis champ Sue Barker for a time in the early 80s.
