Adrian Chiles has revealed his family were ‘horrified’ by the idea of him starring in the Strictly Come Dancing 2021 Christmas special, but described the experience as a ‘real privilege’.

On Christmas Day, the TV presenter is set to go up against First Dates star Fred Sirieix, singer Anne-Marie, The Repair Shop star Jay Blades, comedian Mel Giedroyc and newsreader Moira Stuart in the ballroom.

Adrian, 54, has been paired up with new professional dancer Jowita Przystal, with the pair performing an American Smooth to White Christmas by Otis Redding.

Ahead of the show, the radio presenter said that despite his mum being a ‘massive fan’ of the BBC series, she was taken aback by the idea of her son being a part of it.

Recalling the way his friends and family reacted to the news, he said: ‘They were absolutely, to a man and woman, horrified!

‘Even though my mum’s a massive fan of the show, she said, “Oh God!”’

Fortunately, they soon came around when he shared snippets of how he was doing in rehearsals.

‘But then as soon as we sent them the first videos from training they all went, “Oh, alright, he might not be horrendous after all!”’ he added.

Adrian explained that if he had been asked 11 days ago how he was feeling about the Strictly special, he would have said he was ‘absolutely terrified and full of regret, remorse and wanting to leave the country’.

Now though, he said that he ‘wouldn’t have missed it’, stating: ‘It’s been a real privilege, and I’m not just saying that, to meet Jowita, work intensively on something and just focus on that.

‘Everyone is so flipping nice, I never use the word “vibe”, but the vibe is fantastic!’

While Adrian and Jowita appear to have got along swimmingly, he admitted that he ‘broke wind’ the first time that he tried to lift her in training.

However, the former One Show presenter was full of good things to say about the show, outlining how it has impacted his attitude.

‘Dread and doubt gets you nowhere. I’m 54, it might be too late to alter my mental state but this has been a wake-up call to actually just do that. I’m serious about that,’ he said.

The Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special airs on Christmas Day on BBC One at 5:10pm.
