Tonight on Musicals Week, TV presenter AJ and professional dancer Kai performanced a graceful Waltz to Edelweiss from The Sound of Music.
Beforehand during their VT, Kai explained to his partner how the tale of Maria and Captain von Trapp in the film is a ‘love story’, before the pair twirled on the green hills just like Julie Andrews does in the film.
As the couple spun together, they seemed to be sharing an intimate moment, before AJ turned to Kai and said: ‘I’m not gonna kiss you!’
As can be expected, considering there’s already speculation about a romantic relationship growing between them, Strictly fans were bowled over by the tongue-in-cheek remark.
‘They’re OBSESSED with the prospect of an AJ and Kai kiss,’ one person tweeted.
‘“I’m not gonna kiss you” is gonna set off loads of stories and rumours I can tell,’ someone else remarked.
Another person commented: ‘Oooooh they are messing with us!!’, while someone else said that they ‘died of awkwardness’ from the planned exchange.
After landing at the bottom of the leaderboard last week for their Paso Doble, tonight AJ and Kai were back in fighting form, delivering an elegant routine that earnt 10s from the judges and glowing feedback.
AJ was emotional and Kai received their scores, with the TV presenter dedicating the performance to all the fans who kept them in the competition.
Judge Anton Du Beke spoke about how in The Sound of Music, the dance that Captain von Trapp and Maria share to Edelweiss marks the moment that they realise that they’re in love with each other, saying that he ‘felt that’ between AJ and Kai.
AJ explained that the possibility of being eliminated made her realise ‘how much I’m enjoying this whole experience and I don’t want it to end’.
Several viewers praised their moving performance on the latest episode, with one person writing: ‘The most beautiful performance I’ve ever watched. I cried from start to finish watching AJ and Kai dance that waltz, and I’ll probably still be crying for the rest of the night. Just stunning.’
‘AJ and Kai’s dance brought tears to my eyes!! Loved it,’ someone else commented.
The Strictly Come Dancing results show airs tomorrow at 7.15pm on BBC One.
