If you didn’t already know that Russell Crowe is a huge Tom Fletcher fan, their most recent social media interaction is sure to make your heart swell, as the actor joined in with Strictly Come Dancing viewers wishing Tom better after his positive Covid-19 test.
Following the opening night of Strictly on Saturday, it was confirmed that McFly’s Tom and his professional dance partner Amy Dowden had tested positive for coronavirus, requiring them to self-isolate separately and miss the coming week of the competition.
While Tom backed out of a McFly gig before his diagnosis was announced because he was feeling ‘unwell’, Amy has stated that she has not suffered any symptoms.
Numerous people have been wishing them both speedy recoveries so that they can hopefully return to Strictly for week three – including Gladiator star Russell, who’s been a massive fan of Tom’s for years.
In 2014, Russell was being interviewed by Magic Radio when he recalled coming across the viral videos Tom created of his wife Giovanna Fletcher’s pregnancy and the beautiful song he sang to her at their wedding.
Seven years later, Russell’s admiration for the McFly musician hasn’t waned, as he responded to Tom’s statement about his positive Covid-19 test by asking fans of Indoor Garden Party – a music collective co-created by the actor – to send positive vibes in his direction.
On Sunday, Tom tweeted a statement from McFly, which read: ‘Further to our last message we can now confirm that Tom has tested positive for Covid-19. He is now self isolating and following the latest government guidelines. Please join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.’
Russell quote-tweeted the statement in response, adding: ‘@IGPmusic fans please let Tom know you are thinking of him and wish him well.’
Tom shared his appreciation for Russell’s message by responding with a single heart emoji.
The celeb friendship we never knew we needed in our lives!
While speaking about Tom in 2014, Russell showered him with praise over his viral videos, saying that he believes the musician ‘has such a rich internal life’.
‘It gave me deep pleasure to watch those things,’ the Les Misérables star said.
‘I never would have heard of this guy, even though he’s obviously wildly famous, I hadn’t come across him yet. But now, I just think he’s incredibly special and I’ll be very interested in whatever else he’s going to do.’
At the time, Tom responded: ‘SO AWESOME! Thanks for saying such nice things @russellcrowe, glad you like my videos,’ while his McFly bandmate Harry Judd responded: ‘The coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life!!!!’
In 2017, they shared the stage at an Indoor Garden Party gig alongside several other artists, which Tom said was ‘such an honour’.
Strictly Come Dancing returns this Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
