Susanna Reid thinks Boris Johnson was joking about not knowing who Lorraine was and it ‘backfired’

Susanna Reid has spoken out to say she believes Boris Johnson does know who Lorraine Kelly is, but was trying to make a joke which backfired.

The Good Morning Britain presenter had interviewed the Prime Minister on Tuesday’s show – his first GMB appearance in almost five years – which ended with him famously appearing not to know who Lorraine was.

As Susanna threw to the next show, bringing their interview to a close, Mr Johnson was heard asking: ‘Who’s Lorraine?’

The gaffe became one of the standout moments from the interview, but Susanna believes he did it intentionally to be funny.

Addressing the moment on Wednesday’s show, Susanna told viewers: ‘I think he probably does know who Lorraine Kelly is.

‘She’s a legend of television and he knows who these people are, I think he just thought he was making a funny joke because I was bringing the interview to an end. But unfortunately it just backfires on him.’

Guest Kevin Maguire concurred, adding: ‘Because the mood has changed and those old tricks – ruffling his hair, being unkempt – they just don’t work any more.

Susanna had been praised by viewers for the interview, in which she held Mr Johnson to account on several topics including the cost of living crisis and the conflict in Ukraine.

She began the interview by pointing out how long it had been since he appeared on the show, saying: ‘This is the interview we have waited 1791 days for, and couldn’t come at a better time.

‘It’s a crucial week as voters prepare to have their say in Thursday’s elections. I’m here live in Downing Street’s study with Boris Johnson before he addresses the Ukrainian parliament, the first world leader to do so since Russia’s invasion, but at home troubles are mounting.

‘There are claims of sexism in Parliament, partygate investigations continue and there is a rising cost of living crisis. Prime Minister, we have a lot to get through.’

After Mr Johnson thanked her for having him on the show, Susanna responded: ‘Well thank you for being back with us, and it seems remarkable that before we get back into talking about Ukraine, so many people want to know, are you honest, Prime Minister?’, leaving him fumbling to answer her.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
