The Masked Singer: Glenn Hoddle reveals cardiac arrest inspired him to sign up – ‘I am lucky to be here’

Glenn Hoddle has revealed overcoming a cardiac arrest in 2018 inspired him to sign up for The Masked Singer.
The former footballer and England manager, 63, was the latest star to be un-masked on the ITV show and he was revealed as the face behind the Grandfather Clock.

The judges – Davina McCall, Rita Ora, Jonathan Ross and Mo Gilligan – all failed to correctly guess Glenn’s identity, with many fans surprised to see it was the sports star taking to the stage and showing off his vocals.

With a love for singing, Glenn does have a performing history, but he admits it was one particular event in his life that led to him signing up for the series.

Glenn survived a cardiac arrest in 2018 and he says the experience encouraged him to take up opportunities that come his way, as he feels ‘lucky to be here’.

‘I have always been singing, whether I am any good or not is another thing. I just love singing. I have loved it since I was 16 or 17,’ he said following his appearance on the programme.

‘I just so enjoy singing and why not do it as an opportunity? What happened to me two years ago, I am lucky to be here to be quite honest.’

On signing up for The Masked Singer, Glenn said: ‘I thought to myself, “Why not? Let’s just go for it, let’s enjoy it, enjoy life,” that was part of the decision to go into the show as well.’

Glenn suffered a cardiac arrest while working on the set of BT Sport, who he now works as a football pundit for, on his 61st birthday.

A sound supervisor came to his aid and administered CPR, before Glenn was then taken to hospital and had to undergo a quadruple heart bypass.

At the time, Glenn had just come off air and was kicking a ball around the studio with Robbie Savage. Speaking a year after the incident, Glenn told The Sun: ‘My heart stopped for at least 60 seconds… It’s ironic that if I had died, the last thing I would have done on this earth was kick a ball. What a way to go.

‘It could have happened on live TV. The timing of everything on the day was incredible.’

Believe it or not, his stint on The Masked Singer wasn’t his first when it comes to music. Glenn actually released a single in 1987 alongside his pal and former teammate Chris Waddle called Diamond Lights.

The pair made it on to Top of the Pops and the track landed in the top 20, peaking at number 12 in the music charts.

The Masked Singer continues Saturday on ITV at 7pm.
