The Powerpuff Girls creator gives thoughts on ‘gritty’ remake he has ‘nothing to do with’

The Powerpuff Girls’ original creator has given his verdict on the beloved cartoon’s gritty new live-action remake currently in production.

Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup will be growing up in the new series, being made by Juno creator Diablo Cody, adjusting to life as adults after being forced to be childhood heroes by their dad.

Craig McCracken helped create the Cartoon Network series back in 1998, and wrote 89 episodes for the show, but is not associated with the new project for US network The CW,

So when talking about the new project, he admitted that he was holding out his verdict on the new concept for a while yet.

Speaking to SyFyWire for his new show, Kid Cosmic, he explained: ‘I’m curious to see what they do with it.

‘The initial concept of Powerpuff Girls was the idea that they were little kids being superheroes, so the fact that they’re making them grow up, that sort of changes that initial concept.’

He hastened to add that he wasn’t associated with the show ‘in any way’ but had previously enjoyed the work of executive producer Greg Berlanti.

Berlanti is the EP for a number of smash hit shows including Kaley Cuoco’s The Flight Attendant, Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Dawson’s Creek and You.

The upcoming Powerpuff Girls reboot has yet to be given a release date, but will take on a dark twist.

We’ll catch up with the trio in their twenties, unhappy that they lost their childhood by being trained to become crime-fighters, rather than just being kids.

A release date is yet to be confirmed, and no casting choices have been announced.
