The first look pictures from HBO Max’s upcoming true crime drama The Staircase have dropped and Colin Firth is already giving us chills.

The Love Actually actor is set to star alongside Toni Collette in the eight-part limited series based on a true story, with the pair portraying Michael and Kathleen Peterson.

Firth takes on the role of Peterson, a novelist who was convicted of killing his wife Kathleen December 9, 2001, although he claimed she fell to her death by tumbling down the stairs in their home.

The charge was later reduced to manslaughter after it was discovered a key witness gave misleading testimony.

In one picture, Firth can be seen embracing Collette as he stands behind her with his arms wrapped around her waist as she stares at the Christmas tree in their front room.

Another shows Firth raising a glass of wine for a toast as he sits around the dinner table with his loved ones.

In 2017, Peterson entered an Alford plea – a guilty plea entered because sufficient evidence exists to convict him of the offense, but the defendant asserts innocence – to the voluntary manslaughter of his wife.

Speaking about getting into the role of Peterson, Firth said he chose not to communicate with the novelist.

‘I felt the way the script was structured and just the whole approach of this was its own ecosystem, so to speak,’ he told Deadline and other press.

‘These are created characters but we all know what the source is. We all know that these characters have names of living people, but it’s very carefully calibrated to tell the story in a certain way.’

He continued: ‘I felt that I wanted to keep my inspiration, my motivation, and the sense of the source material, as much as possible contained within the script and the way it was written.

‘I felt that that could have been skewed in some way if I had personal connections, during the shooting of this, with Michael Peters and other people concerned.’

Firth added: ‘If I’d had a personal response to the meeting, it might have prevented me from tuning into this world of varying possibilities that had been created.’

The Staircase boasts of a star-studded cast which also includes Michael Stuhlbarg, Juliette Binoche, Dane DeHaan, Olivia DeJonge, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Tim Guinee.

Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sophie Turner, Vincent Vermignon, Odessa Young, and Parker Posey also feature.

A release date is yet to be confirmed.

The Staircase will air on HBO Max.
