This Morning’s Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield confuse fans as they maintain social distancing upon return

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield have left fans scratching their heads as they finally returned to their presenting duties on This Morning after their summer break.

The pair kicked off Monday’s show by celebrating their reunion while also telling audiences that they will keep social distancing despite the rules being relaxed.

‘We’re home!’ Holly exclaimed as she walked into the studio.

Holly and Phil then picked up a metre rule stuck to reveal they’re still going to front the show without coming into close contact.

‘Goodbye the two-metre stick and hello to the one-metre stick,’ Holly said before adding: ‘Oh my gosh, we are so close yet still so far.’

‘We’re just randomly making up rules here, but it seemed like a good idea,’ Phil laughed.

‘Still can’t lick you,’ Holly giggled.

While viewers were delighted to see Holly and Phil back on the iconic sofa, many were left confused as to why they were keeping at a distance.

‘Holly and Phil making up the rules as they go along when they’ve posed for new promo pictures together.. why pretend???’ asked one.

‘Just bloody stand next to each other,’ added another.

Holly and Phil have been away from the ITV daytime show since July, with various hosts, including Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, filling in for them.

The pair were pictured sitting next to each other at Wimbledon in July and appeared to be in great spirits. They also posed for pictures together as they attended the seventh day of the annual tennis tournament.

Holly said she was looking forward to reuniting with her ‘second family’ on This Morning following her break.

‘Time with my family over the summer is the best, but I always look forward to seeing my second family back at This Morning,’ she said.

‘The return in September is always quite an exciting time to learn about what we’ve got coming up over the next year and it amazes me how the team always come up with new and fresh ideas every time.’

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
