U.S. Marshals are offering $25,000 (£19,300) for information on convicted killer Lester Eubanks who has been on the run for over 40 years and is now the subject of Unsolved Mysteries Volume 2.
Eubanks, 76, admitted to killing 14-year-old Mary Ellen Deneer in 1965 and was sentenced to death.
However, two push backs saw his death sentence extended, and the death penalty was eventually abolished by the Supreme Court in 1972, with Eubanks subsequently moving to federal prison.
However, Eubanks was eventually allowed on day release unaccompanied by a guard and seized the opportunity to run.
Following the episode Death Row Fugitives, which takes a deep-dive into the murder and Eubank’s escape, the U.S. Marshal Service is hopeful they will catch the killer alive.
The U.S. Marshal’s social media account tweeted alongside a poster promising a $25,000 reward: ‘A new episode of the Netflix series Unsolved Mysteries: Volume 2 features the story of convicted child killer and USMS 15 Most Wanted fugitive Lester Eubanks, who disappeared from northern Ohio 47 years ago.
‘Death Row Fugitive is available for streaming beginning 10/19/2020.’
Deneer was raped and shot twice by Eubanks while searching for change for the laundromat on Nov 14, 1965.
He left Deneer for dead but later returned to the scene to find she was still alive, eventually killing her with a brick.
Eubanks has been on the run since 1973 and is described by authorities as having black hair, brown eyes, weighing 175 pounds and standing at 5-foot-11 during the time of his disappearance.
There have been plenty of theories surrounding Eubanks’ whereabouts, with some believing he must be dead while others believe he’s now living as an artist after taking up painting on death row.
Anyone with information on Eubanks is urged to call the U.S. Marshal Service tipline at 866-4-WANTED from the United States.
Unsolved Mysteries is available to stream on Netflix now.
