What happened in Marcella series 2 as the Anna Friel show returns?

*Contains spoilers for season two of Marcella*

Season two of Marcella ended on a cliffhanger after Anna Friel’s character faked her own death.

Season three of the ITV drama begins tonight, but in case you need a reminder, here’s what happened in season two.

The last we saw of troubled detective Marcella Backland was when she not only lost her children and her job, but she also lost her identity.

After discovering through hypnotherapy that she was the one who accidentally killed her baby daughter Juliette when trying to quiet her, Marcella hit rock bottom.

Before the Juliette revelation, Marcella very nearly lost her son Edward (Asher Flowers) to serial killer Jane Colletti (Michelle Terry).

Jane was the mother of Edward’s girlfriend and was revealed to have abducted and murdered 17 children over the years through lobotomy.

Jane used her medical skills as a midwife to sedate her victims and insert wooden tokens decorated with protective symbols into their abdomens, before lobotomising them.

And, she almost got Edward until Marcella caught her.

Before the last episode came to a close, Marcella went to throw herself off a building before her colleague Rav Sangha (Ray Panthaki) came to the rescue.

After she confessed to Rav about what really happened to Juliette, Marcella attacked him and left him handcuffed to a toilet cubicle.

The last we saw of her, she had cut her face and hair with scissors and was living under a bridge…

But, what really happened to her and where is she now?

Marcella begins tonight at 9pm on ITV.
