Last year’s lockdown must-watch, Tiger King, had the nation gripped as we learnt about big cats in captivity and their eccentric owners.

The antagonist of the Netflix show, Joe Exotic, was later sent to prison for plotting to kill rival zookeeper Carole Baskin.

But documentary fans had already met the breeder in Louis Theroux’s 2011 film, America’s Most Dangerous Pets – and tonight he’ll reexamine that interview.

Theroux’s new feature-length programme, Shooting Joe Exotic, will dig deeper into the explosive world of big cat keepers, and what the stars think of their new-found fame.

The episode synopsis reads: ‘Louis revisits his 2011 documentary America’s Most Dangerous Pets, returning to Oklahoma to explore what has happened since.

‘Joe Exotic, aka Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, now resides in a federal prison after being found guilty of a murder-for-hire plot and multiple animal cruelty charges, and having been the subject of hit Netflix documentary Tiger King.’

The show will reveal ‘hours’ of unseen footage from Theroux’s original documentary, including a dramatic confrontation where Joe Exotic says ‘ ‘F*** you. F*** Carole Baskin. F*** PETA.’ – before asking for a hug.

When did Louis Theroux meet Joe Exotic?

For anyone familiar with Tiger King – aka everyone – there might be some confusion as to how Joe Exotic is on the show if he’s in prison.

Theroux first went and met with Joe Exotic back in 2011.

He has gone on to say that he regrets not grilling Exotic more on his interesting love life.

Speaking on The Graham Norton show, the documentary filmmaker said: ‘I knew him before he was famous.‘

‘I spent the best part of a week with him for a documentary on dangerous pets in 2011. If I have any regrets, it’s not talking to him more about his two husbands and his rules of engagement for three-person lovemaking!’

Obviously, a lot has changed for the Tiger King since then.

As documented in the show, in the last decade since Theroux met him, the big personality ran for Governor, got married to someone else, and ended up being sentenced for 22 years after he was found guilty of plotting to kill Carole Baskin, killing five tigers and illegally selling rare wild animals.
