Why does Alan Partridge wear a tooth badge on his jacket in This Time With Alan Partridge?

There’s no denying that season one of This Time With Alan Partridge was a triumph.

The show was one of 2019’s comedy hits, with Steve Coogan’s small screen alter ego proving as fantastically awkward as ever as he finds himself back on the Beeb, as the unexpected co-host of the titular current affairs show.

Series two is on now – with Steve’s co-star Tim Key saying the new eps are all about Alan ‘learning to be woke’.

But one question about the show still remains. Just what is Alan’s weird tooth lapel badge (complete with cartoon face) all about?

We decided to investigate…

What’s with the tooth badge on Alan Partridge’s jacket?

The tooth badge got people talking on Twitter since it made it first appeared on Alan’s jacket back in 2019.

Although he didn’t wear it every week, it’s played a silent but prominent role in the series – and we’ve been left wondering what it’s all about.

We saw it here for example.

And later, when he did his bit for Comic Relief.

Is Alan promoting the importance of dental hygiene by any chance (as he promoted the importance of washing your hands earlier in the series?) Could it be an odd bit of promotional Partridge merchandise?

Actually, it’s neither of those things – and in fact Coogan has revealed what it means.

Speaking to The Guardian ahead of This Time’s first series, he revealed that the badge represents ‘a shadowy showbiz organisation’ that he explained ‘looks after’ its members while doing philanthropic works – comparing it to the Freemasons.

Coogan went on to explain that it may never actually be mentioned on the show, but ‘has been worked out and is authentic to the character’.

So, now you know.

When is This Time With Alan Partridge on?

Season two of This Time With Alan Partridge airs Fridays at 9.30pm, on BBC One.

Once episodes have started airing, you can catch up on BBC iPlayer.
